Meta AI answers. Muse acts. Meta AI is the assistant built into Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger (and the meta.ai app) that you ask questions and generate images with. Muse is a separate app and service that connects to your email, calendar and shopping accounts and carries out tasks: booking, buying, replying, negotiating. Both run on Meta's Muse Spark model, which is why the names blur together.
Why this is confusing
Meta's AI branding in 2026 has three layers, and they share a word.
- Meta AI is the assistant Meta has shipped inside its apps since 2023. Ask it a question in WhatsApp, tap the blue circle in Instagram, use the meta.ai website or app. Chatbot.
- Muse Spark is the AI model, released by Meta Superintelligence Labs in 2026. It powers Meta AI. Developers can use it directly.
- Muse (September 2026) is a new product: a personal agent, in its own app, that uses Muse Spark to take actions for you.
So when Meta says "Meta AI is now powered by Muse Spark," the chatbot got smarter, but it did not become the agent. And when someone says "I use Muse in WhatsApp," they might mean either one, because both exist there. Searches like "muse ai vs meta ai" and "does meta ai use muse spark" come from exactly this tangle.

What Meta AI is
Meta AI is the thing most people have already met. It is the search bar assistant in WhatsApp, the chat inside Instagram DMs, the voice in Ray-Ban Meta glasses, and the meta.ai site. It is a capable chatbot: ask it anything, get an answer, generate a picture, summarise a link, translate a message, brainstorm.
Since 2026 it has run on Muse Spark, so its answers improved noticeably. On the Mac there is a free Meta AI app (still labelled beta). It is available in far more countries than Muse.
What Meta AI does not do is act outside the chat. It cannot open your inbox, put something on your calendar, or buy anything. If you ask it to book a flight, it will tell you how.
What Muse is
Muse is the agent. It has its own app and its own service. When you connect an app to Muse, it gets a real, permissioned way into that account and can do things there. It has a private computer in Meta's cloud with a web browser, so it can use websites, not just talk about them. It keeps working after you close the app and checks back with you before anything sensitive.

Do you need both?
You probably already have Meta AI whether you want it or not, because it is built into apps you use. The question is whether to add Muse.
Add Muse if you have recurring chores you would hand to an assistant: email replies, bookings, comparisons, bills, selling things, planning. It is free for most use, so the cost of trying is your time.
Stick with Meta AI if you only want quick answers, images, and summaries, or you are outside the US and Canada, or you do not want to connect accounts to an AI. Meta AI never asks for account access.
They do not conflict. You can ask Meta AI a question in Instagram and ask Muse to do something in its own app the same minute.
Where Muse Image fits
A third source of confusion. Muse Image is Meta's image generation model, launched in July 2026, and it appears inside Instagram and WhatsApp as part of Meta AI's features, not as part of the Muse agent. It is the product behind the July backlash, when a launch feature let anyone tag a public Instagram account in a prompt and generate images using that person's photos. Meta removed the tagging feature within days, but the underlying "sharing and reuse" setting still exists and is on by default for public accounts. So: Muse Image is not the Muse agent, and turning off Instagram reuse has nothing to do with the Muse app.
How to tell which one you are talking to
- In WhatsApp: Meta AI is the built-in assistant (the blue ring icon, or @Meta AI in a group). Muse only appears if you linked it from the Muse app using the QR code in its Settings; it shows as its own chat.
- In Instagram, Facebook, Messenger: always Meta AI. Muse is not embedded there.
- A separate app called Muse, or the site muse.ai: Muse.
- If it offers to connect your Gmail: Muse. Meta AI never does.
- If it asks to approve a purchase or an email before sending: Muse.
Switching from Meta AI to Muse
There is nothing to migrate. Install Muse, sign in with the same Meta account, and start. Muse does not import your Meta AI chat history, and your Meta AI conversations stay where they were.
